Nominations now open for 2019 BWA Denton & Janice Lotz Human Rights Award

The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) has begun the process of accepting nominations for the 2019 Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award. Nominations will close November 30, 2018.

The award is intended to recognize and give visibility to women and men who have done outstanding work in defending and promoting human rights as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Any Baptist individual, church, or organization can submit a nomination and any Baptist is eligible to receive the award. Persons may not make nominations on their own behalf. The nominations form is available for download on the BWA website at www.bwanet.org.

The awardee will be announced at the March 2019 BWA Executive Committee meeting and the award presented during the BWA Annual Gathering in July 2019 in Nassau, Bahamas. Last years awardee, Christer Daelander of Sweden, was honored for his work engaging issues of religious freedom in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia at the United Nations and elsewhere.

Recent awardees include 2017s recipient Cynthia Maung of Myanmar/Thailand for her work as a human rights advocate and medical doctor who devoted nearly 30 years to providing healthcare to displaced Karen in refugee camps along the Thai border; Illie Coada of Moldova in 2014 for his work as a human rights campaigner, anti-human trafficking advocate, and Baptist pastor; Glen Stassen of the USA in 2013 for his work as a just peacemaker theorist and advocate for freedom and justice; Edgar Palacios of El Salvador/USA in 2012 for his work as a peacemaker and advocate for freedom and justice; and Wati Aier of India in 2011 for his work as a peacemaker, advocate for peace, and role model.

The BWA Denton and Janice Lotz Human Rights Award is the most internationally recognized award highlighting the work of Baptists engaged in issues of justice today. The Baptist World Alliance,founded in 1905, is a fellowship of 239 conventions and unions in 125 countries and territories comprising 47 million baptized believers in 169,000 churches.
